ATMP.5Na (Pentasodium Salt of ATMP)

ATMP.5Na, also known as the pentasodium salt of ATMP, is an organic phosphonic acid with the formula C3H7NO9P3Na5. It is a white crystalline powder, easily soluble in water and has excellent chelating, low threshold inhibition and crystal structure disruption properties. In this way, it prevents scale formation in water systems and prevents corrosion on metal surfaces.

Properties of ATMP.5Na:

  • Molecular Weight: 409 g/mol
  • Melting Point: 200 °C (decomposes)
  • Boiling Point: Not applicable
  • Density: 1.33 g/mL (at 20 °C)
  • Solubility: 61 g/100 mL in water
  • pKa Value: 10.5

Production

  • ATMP.5Na is synthesized through the Mannich-type reaction, where ammonia, formaldehyde, and phosphoric acid react to form ATMP. The resulting ATMP is then neutralized with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to produce ATMP.5Na.

Applications

  • Detergents and Cleaning Products: ATMP.5Na chelates metal ions, reducing water hardness and preventing scale formation.
  • Water Treatment: It acts as a scale inhibitor and corrosion preventer in industrial water systems, particularly in cooling water systems with high hardness, alkalinity, and pH levels, as well as in petroleum refineries.
  • Metal Processing: ATMP.5Na is used in tinning, soldering, and galvanizing, where it removes oxide layers from metal surfaces, improving adhesion.
  • Fertilizer Production: It serves as a nitrogen source in fertilizers, especially for crops grown in water-rich environments, such as rice.
